Boston artist William Baxter Closson was a member of the Boston Art Club and the Copley Society, and represented by Vose Galleries.  Born in Thetford, Vermont, he studied at the Thetford Academy and the Lowell Institute. He later lived in Newton and in Magnolia. After a successful career as a wood engraver, he turned to painting in 1894. He quickly established a reputation for his genteel and often fanciful depiction of women and children.He exhibited at the Paris Salon, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Paris International Exposition, the Columbian Exposition, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Corcoran, winning numerous medals and awards.  His works are in many museums and collections including the National Gallery, the Boston MFA, the Worcester Art Museum, the Springfield Art Museum, the Albright Art Gallery, Vose Galleries, and the PAFA.
