1920s Peaceable Kingdom Oil Painting Immigrant & African American Allegory

Exceptionally unusual intersection of early 20th century social reform and a traditional, religious Americana theme.

Uncle Sam & Lady Liberty (w/elements of the American flag) seen praying in the foreground to a young Jesus.

He is flanked by a lion, bear, steer, bald eagle, horse, sheep, wolf and snake winding through his legs.

A young black boy is seen at left w/ a girl perhaps wearing Union Jack flag, a Hispanic boy behind her and Chinese boy far right. The sun rises on factory smoke stacks and a ship’s rigging.

Signed Mary E. Moore of Hildreth Nebraska. Moore created a hopeful and inclusive picture of a growing America using all the reference points she would have acquired living in the Midwest.

Measures 20 x 30” on original stretcher w/ wear at edges & surface scratches.

Exhibition tag reverse reads Peace Christmas Card Competition // Room 1010 // 100 East 45th Street // NY. Picture to be delivered before January 10, 1924.
