Mid Century Visionary Outsider Art Drawing Archive

Reminiscent of Darger’s Vivian Girls had they grown up to be JFK era society women.

This appears to be the personal expression of an Eastern Pennsylvania socialite, with significant themes of societal pressures, introspective moods and isolation, often laden with syrupy language and MUCH scripture / devotional text.

Allusions to God, Country and Family abound including cameos from Santa Claus, the American  Flag, Jesus, Lyndon B. Johnson and the William W. Scranton family (Pennsylvania governor and ardent JFK backer).

Compelling and virtually inexplicable - Visionary art does not usually begin from this social class perspective. Aesthetics conjure Pennsylvania German Frakturs as much as Tattoo Flash.

(36) 8 x 10 paper sheets w/ a mixture of pencil outlines, occasional ink and colored pencils.

Double sided (72 in total, of which there are 49 full page drawings). There are a very few spots of either smudge or foxing and nicked edges.

Each stands alone or could make one smashing installation together.
