Carved from elm with a thin shell shaped bowl— the top crescent may represent the head of a Manitou or possibly a quahog shell. The handle is strongly defined with stepped sides. The crescent is similar to a Seneca ladle in the collection at the American Museum of Natural History (cat.# 50.1/1519).
Illustrated and discussed: Powers, Steven S. North American Burl Treen, Brooklyn, NY, 2005, p. 166
Condition: Excellent. Untouched, complex surface. Small loss to front of bowl.
