"Georgian Elegance": Large English Creamware Jug & Basin,
Probably Leeds,
Circa 1780
A magnificent and substantial example of late 18th-century English creamware, this large jug and basin set is attributed to the Leeds Pottery (or a similar high-quality Yorkshire manufactory).
The set is distinguished by its refined, undecorated surface, relying entirely on crisp molding and the creamy, translucent glaze for its aesthetic appeal. Both pieces feature elegant vertical reeded (fluted) molding on the body. The basin has a shaped, scalloped border edged with a delicate meandering leaf scroll, a motif repeated on the rim of the jug.
The jug is particularly sculptural, featuring a flared hollow foot and an intricate double intertwined loop handle that terminates in applied floral and leaf clusters. A rare and charming detail is found under the spout: the lip is decorated on the underside with a large, molded leaf, showcasing the potter's attention to hidden details.
Provenance: P.W. & R. Fane Collection.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. The glaze is glossy and the molding remains sharp. A chip to the foot on the side has been repaired invisibly.
Measurements:
Overall (Assembled): 11 1/2 inches high x 13 inches wide x 11 1/2 inches deep (29.2 cm x 33 cm x 29.2 cm);
Jug: 10 1/2 inches high x 7 1/2 inches wide x 4 3/4 inches deep;
Basin Diameter: ~13 inches (derived from overall width).
Historical Context:
During the late 18th century, Leeds Pottery became the primary rival to Josiah Wedgwood, renowned for producing creamware (or "Queen's Ware") of exceptional lightness and color. The "twisted handle" was a signature of the Leeds factory, often formed by two strips of clay intertwined to create a handle that was both strong and delicate. Large-scale wash sets like this were essential fixtures in Georgian bedchambers, though few survive as complete matched pairs today.
