Ann Stone, England, 1820

A fine basket filled with fruit provides the focal point for this very good sampler which was made by Ann Stone in 1820. We particularly admire the bunches of grapes, grape leaves and one tendril of a vine. Other flowering plants, arranged in a balanced composition, continue the organic theme of the sampler. Ann carefully stitched two moralistic verses and surrounded it all with a sinuous border of buds on a leafy vine, framing the sampler perfectly.

The sampler is worked in silk on wood and is in excellent condition. It has been conservation mounted and is in its original black and gold frame.
