This handsome pair of Regency argands are rarely encountered in this impressive size and presence. Each lamp is supported by an imposing mythical chimera with upswept wings on a large monopodic leg. The wide square bases are decorated with borders of cast leaves. The classical masks between the arms are in a style associated with Thomas Hope. An overall patinated finish covers the entire surfaces. A smaller lamp with an identical base can be viewed in an early lighting trade catalog at the Winterthur Museum Library in Delaware. An identical pair of lamps in two-tone gilt lacquered finishes appoint the Greek Revival Room at the American Museum in Britain in Bath, England.
