These chairs are identical to the side chair in the Winterthur collection pictured in "American Furniture, The Federal Period" by Montgomery on page 135 and #86 on page 139. They very well could be from the same set of chairs except that the seat frames are poplar. The carving is very well done and the color and patina are choice. Note the graceful serpentine front seat rail and that the tapered legs are molded on both the fronts and sides. They are in excellent original structural condition including the seat frames with a few insignificant old imperfections and are ready to go into a home and be used.
