Isle of Man, ca. late 18th/early 19th century. Signs (marks) were mounted to the outside of the home. They assured that the fire brigade would attend to the insured home should a fire break out (which occurred often). Stamped from heavy gauge lead, this mark shows the the account number at the bottom. Fine condition and strong patina. About 6 1/2 inches tall x 6 inches wide x 1 deep. Wire for hanging. The third photo shows a museum curator holding a similar example.....A striking object with an ancient appearance.
