Early Logging Village with Shay Locomotive, Late 19th Century

A captivating glimpse into the actual setting of an early logging village portrayed by an unknown naive artist. The point of view of the artist centers upon the inner workings of the village itself and its functionality, along with the necessity of a railroad, Shay locomotive, and accompanying box cars. The dramatic components include the expansive village, rising smoke stacks, clear cut mountains, and prominent receding tracks in the foreground.

On closer inspection, one will find a Shay locomotive with its agile ability to maneuver tight mountain turns, the "UP" insignia on the train which identifies it as Union Pacific, escalating coal shuttles, a driver and wagon team pulling a load of coal, train brakeman, a web of sturdy trestles, a water powered log conveyor, cable spar tree for lifting logs from the river, and scattered logs on the river bank. The artist was meticulous in depicting details of the encampment, which lends to the narrative and authenticity of the work.

Under black light, no touch ups observed.
