House, Sheep and Willow Tree Sampler, likely New England, circa 1820

A small and very charming antique sampler, this may have been made as a precursor to the next project - a larger, highly developed sampler incorporating this endearing pictorial scene. There doesn’t seem to have been the intent to include a maker’s name or date on this, as the composition is complete. It was possibly made in southern New Hampshire as it resembles house and willow tree samplers from that area.

Worked in silk on linen, this is in excellent condition with some minor secured areas to the linen; it has been conservation mounted into a molded and painted black frame.
