Manhattan, New York, ca. 1800. Attributed to David Morgan or Thomas Commeraw (a free African American potter)—both worked together at Corlears Hook in Lower Manhattan for a short time, using similar crescent designs. The incised crescents on this ovoid jar are cobalt-glazed and arranged in a unique compass design with hearts about the perimeter, almost certainly a love token as a gift for a wife, daughter, or friend and therefore there is not a branded makers mark. Excellent condition. About 9 inches tall.
