4'9" x 6'2" Antique Karaja Rug, Northwest Persia, Circa 1920

4.9 x 6.2 Antique Karaja Rug, Heriz District, Northwest Persia, Circa 1920

Antique Karaja rugs were woven in the Heriz district in northwest Persia’s Azerbaijan Province. Although they feature a single-knotted construction, which makes them a lighter and often more pliable textile than other Heriz area weavings, they share the typical Heriz characteristics of beautiful color quality and charming, geometric articulation of design.

This antique Karaja rug is distinctive in having a central medallion with corner spandrels. Most small Karaja rugs feature three medallions and no spandrels.

Acquired directly from a Virginia private collection.
