Wood & Hughes 'Medallion' Sterling Fish Serving Set, NYC, c. 1870

This is a stunning serving set with dramatic proportions. The length of the handles consist of four silver rods joined together for strength. The upper handles are designed with oval female portrait medallions. The large serving areas have a matte finish and soft gilt overlay. They are hand engraved with classical foliage and pierced flowers.

These rare servers are marked on the back 'W&H/ STERLING' and by the retailer 'KITTS & WERNE.' The fork and slice measure 11.75 and 12.75 respectively, weigh a combined 8.35 troy ounces and are in excellent antique condition with the exception of removed monograms on the backs of the handles.

Provenance: From the collection of Dale E. Bennett

Literature: "American Silver Fish Servers 1840-1910 Part Two" by Dale E. Bennett, in Silver Magazine, November/December, 2005, pp. 18-29. The servers are pictured on pages 28-29.
