Gorham Antique Sterling Silver & Other Metals Child's Set, Providence, RI, 1881

This rare mixed metal child's set consists of a bowl and plate.

The bowl, with shaped corners, is adorned with four various Japonesque scenes with brass and copper applique. One scene features a male figure behind a woman crossing a bridge. The other scenes are of a grasshopper, a phoenix soaring above a tree, and a bird above a frog hiding amongst the grass. The finely engraved backgrounds feature hills, trees, birds, and exotic foliage.

The unusual plate has overturned corners (matching the shape of the bowl) and is engraved with clouds, grasses and a stream with a bridge. An applied female figure is crossing the bridge with another copper female figure behind her. The phoenix soars above a copper exotic tree under which another frog hides.

The plate and bowl are engraved underneath 'W.K. Jr./ April 14th 1882/ from/ L.L'.

This wonderful set is marked 'GORHAM & CO' along with Gorham's trademark and 'STERLING & OTHER METALS'. The bowl and plate are marked with the model numbers '250'. The plate measures 6.75 square. The bowl is 5 inches square by 2.75 inches high. The set weighs a combined 18.65 troy ounces and is very good antique condition with light wear and surface scratches.
