Mary Orr
Needlework Sampler
Philadelphia, PA Dated 1806
In the 9th year of her age, Mary Orr worked this graphic sampler featuring a mansion flanked with a disproportionately large striped basket and a tree on a lawn with sheep, owl, and a large bird. A similar castlelike mansion appears on Philadelphia samplers from the Zeller School, the image was probably adapted from the same source.
Mary Orr was born c. 1798 and was probably the Mary Orr that married Thomas Allen at Philadelphia’s Third Presbyterian Church on November 7, 1822 at age 24.
