During World War I the Commission for Relief in Belgium was established under the chairmanship of Herbert Hoover to aid the Belgium people. The commission would send flour to Belgium in these sacks and the Belgium women would embroider the empty sacks. They were sold to raise money for additional food or given as gifts to members of the Commission out of gratitude for the aid given to the Belgian people. Herbert Hoover was given several hundred of these flour sacks as gifts and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library has one of the largest collections of World War I flour sacks in the world. The lettering and Uncle Sam are embroidered while Uncle Sam’s face and hands are hand painted. The flour sack is in excellent condition. The frame is modern. W: 17.25”, H: 28.25”.
