Excellent condition, retaining the original molded gilt frame. James Tyler was best known as a maritime painter and illustrator. Born in Oswego, New York, he moved to New York city and later lived in Greenwich, Connecticut where he painted much of his marine subject matters. This whaling ship painted under a moonlit sky shows Tyler’s talent in capturing the use of light and dark, commonly referred to as chiaroscuro.
