Delightful Portrait of a Pretty Young Woman

New England, ca. 1840-1845. Oil on board. A sensitive portrait in a crisp, flat likeness of a lovely, slender young lady, probably late teenage years, in three-quarter view, attractively framed by tree branches. She is fashionably attired in the popular lace-topped striated-black dress of the day, and wearing a simple little necklace with perhaps a gold-jewelry clasp. Attributed to William Kennedy (1817-1871), born in New Hampshire, working as a portrait painter in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maine in the early to mid-1840's. Presented in a paint decorated frame and glass of the period that is likely original. The glass adds considerably to the character as its non-uniformities display well. The painting is in excellent condition with dry surface and no in-painting, with minor rubbing lower left. Overall frame size of 16 1/4 inches tall x 12 1/4 wide......Provenance: Noted folk art dealer/collector Mary Allis, Southport, CT.
