Sensational Early Sign

America, Canada, or England, ca. 1820-1840. Original very dry paint. Not a trade sign per se, yet undoubtedly hung in a space that it could be seen by many, extolling the virtue of being humble with scripture support for that message. Skillfully painted by a professional sign painter with bellflower border and soft-yellow lettering against a flat black paint (not sand). The red-painted back held by batons joined by cut nails and off-center slotted screws. Sensational condition with just the expected shrinkage across the grain of the boards. Oval is about 4 feet wide x 3 tall. The traditional spelling of "honour" could represent a carry-over of English/New England heritage, or could have been painted in Britain and brought over.
