Northeast, ca. 1820-1840. Original paint on maple, with integrally turned finial. A very good example of this form and decoration with paint moved into attractive patterns. Lathe turned with widely spaced tool marks readily apparent. Original over-varnish with scattered white specks captured within it, the varnish being dryer on the lid where sediments in the air from the fireplace would settle. Structurally excellent with no cracks. Pleasing size of about 4 1/4 inches to the top of the finial x 4 diameter. Perhaps for spices or sugar.
