In the book MASTER CRAFTSMEN OF NEWPORT: THE TOWNSENDS AND GODDARDS the author Michael Moses set out to provide a compilation of quantifiable data--including construction, design and decoration details--through which any collector, dealer, or curator could authenticate furniture made by the famed Townsend and Goddard families of Newport, Rhode Island. With the help of the Israel Sack, Inc. firm, who became cosponsors of the book, Moses gained entree into numerous private and public collections and sales, where he was able to study the objects thoroughly first hand. The result is the most comprehensive study out there on the subject. This hardcover book with dustjacket is in fine condition and has 361 pages with more than 100 black and white photographs of furniture with numerous details shown as well. Eight chapters provide impressive information about forms and makers, including the work of John Townsend, John Goddard, Job Townsend, Edmund Townsend, Thomas Townsend, and Daniel Goddard. Numerous appendices and a bibliography finish out the book.
