This well-woven coiled basket was made by the Kawaiisu Indians, who live in the California Tehachapi Valley and mountains, which straddles the ridge of the Sierra Mountains. They wove were very versatile basketry weavers.
This basket is known as a "botttleneck" basket because of the neck that was woven into the basket. Unusual for the predominance of Joshua tree root, this basket has an all-over lightening design broken by a central horizontal band. The basket has 16 stitches per inch and 9 coils per inch and it is in excellent condition. The other materials used were willow and dyed bracken fern.
