Michael Moses authored this book on the famous Townsend and Goddard furniture makers of Newport, Rhode Island, and published on the subject with the help of the famed purveyors of American decorative arts Israel Sack, Inc. Still regarded as the most authoritative work on the subject, the book features a thorough introduction to the various makers in those two families and the differences to help discern what was made by whom. The focus is on being able to identify pieces, and authenticate them accurately. Authenticated examples are shown, documents and signatures compared, forms are expained and grouped to show similarities and differences. Evidence provided by geneaological sources and account books allows for several appendices in the back. Hardcover with dust jacket. 361 pages with hundreds of primarily black and white photographs, with some color examples as well. Very fine condition.
