Mark McHugh & Spencer Gordon have been in business together as Spencer Marks, Ltd. since 1986. We sell fine antique silver privately, at shows, and on our website.
While we stock American, British and Continental silver from the 17th through mid-20th centuries, our strength is in American silver from the 19th and early 20th centuries. We constantly seek the rare, fine and important for our clients.
The editor of Silver Magazine has called us ‘some of the most knowledgeable [people] in the field of silver.’ Our clients include the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Winterthur Museum; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; many other institutions and some of the finest private collectors in the country. We’ve been quoted as experts in publications as diverse as Maine Antique Digest, The Philadelphia Inquirer and American Express’s Departures magazine. We have served on vetting committees (including The San Francisco Fall Antiques Show and the Art and Antique Dealer's League of America's Spring Show) and give lectures and informal talks on the subject of silver.
Currently, we exhibit at fine shows such as The Delaware Antiques Show, The Washington Antiques Show, The San Francisco Fall Antiques Show and The Art and Antique Dealers League Spring Antiques Show, The ADA/ Historic Deerfield Show and others. Our approach is scholarly and detailed; we strive to keep these pieces in their context. Great designers and artisans have worked in silver and we take great pleasure in selling it.
We are proud members of The Antique Dealers Association of America, The Art and Antiques Dealers League of America and The Antiques Council. These are member run, invitation only organizations whose select members adhere to the highest ethical and business standards. We are also members of The Silver Society (London), and The New York Silver Society, two scholarly and social organizations.
